Figurative Sculpture

“Purple Heart”
(Measurements)

I wanted this sculpture to capture the feel of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for my social issue. I accomplished this by building up a well built man and dressing him in bandages and a tactical vest with a Purple Heart adorning it. The big frame paints a picture that even past all that muscle is a broken soul, further illustrated by the pose I chose. Which is clasping their face while looking down. Also, I channeled a bit of classical antiquity by having the other limb stop at the elbow, mimicking a aged statue. The rough appearance of the sculpture itself is also working with the rest of these elements to drive home the effects PTSD has on someone. His back is turned to the other sculpture to represent the shame those who come back feel because their “broken” now.

“Willful Ignorance”
(Measurements)

Along a similar line but on the opposite end of the spectrum, I wanted this piece to depict the majority back home that brush aside those effected by PTSD or similar issues. A sort of symmetry is made by also making this form very defined and built as well. This was done really drive home the two sides of the same coin motif I’m going for. He is blindfolded and in a relaxed position to show the blatant disregard of the other man’s plight. The silver necklace works with this to paint a full picture of comfort and complacency with the unwillingness to change even with “facing” the problem.
